Materials:
- Yarn (choose any color you like)
- Crochet hook (appropriate for your yarn size, usually 3.5mm or 4mm for worsted weight)
- Scissors
- Yarn needle (for weaving in ends)
Abbreviations:
- ch = chain
- sl st = slip stitch
- sc = single crochet
- hdc = half double crochet
- dc = double crochet
- inc = increase (2 sc in same stitch)
- dec = decrease (sc 2 together)
Instructions:
Start:
- Make a Magic Ring (or ch 4, sl st to first ch to form a ring).
- Round 1: 6 sc in the magic ring. (6)
- Round 2: Inc in each stitch around. (12)
- Round 3: (1 sc, inc) around. (18)
- Round 4: (2 sc, inc) around. (24)
- Round 5: (3 sc, inc) around. (30)
- Round 6: (4 sc, inc) around. (36)
- Round 7: (5 sc, inc) around. (42)
- Round 8: (6 sc, inc) around. (48)
Now, we’re going to shape the crescent moon:
- Round 9: (7 sc, inc) around. (54)
- Round 10: (8 sc, inc) around. (60)
At this point, you’ll have a flat circle.
- Round 11-12: Continue with straight sc around for two more rounds. (60)
Shape the Crescent:
- Round 13: (8 sc, dec) around. (54)
- Round 14: (7 sc, dec) around. (48)
- Round 15: (6 sc, dec) around. (42)
- Round 16: (5 sc, dec) around. (36)
- Round 17: (4 sc, dec) around. (30)
- Round 18: (3 sc, dec) around. (24)
- Round 19: (2 sc, dec) around. (18)
- Round 20: (1 sc, dec) around. (12)
Now, the moon should start to have a crescent shape. Finish off when you have only a small portion left, keeping the shape of the moon intact.
Finishing:
- Close up any gaps.
- Weave in all loose ends.
If you’d like to add a little face or other features, you could use embroidery or safety eyes.
Optional: Add a Hanging Loop
To hang your moon, you can add a chain of 10-15 ch stitches at the top of your moon and then slip stitch to secure it.
