Materials Needed

  • Worsted weight yarn (approximately 1200-1500 yards)
  • Size H (5mm) crochet hook
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle

Gauge

10 stitches (sts) x 10 rows = 4 inches (in) square in waffle stitch pattern

Instructions

Foundation Chain

  1. Measure the desired width of your blanket. For a throw size blanket, you will need approximately 101 chains.
  2. Chain a multiple of 2 plus 1 to achieve the desired width. For example, chain 101 for a throw size blanket.
  3. Start with a slip knot on the hook, then chain 1. This will count as your first stitch.

Row 1 (Right Side)

  1. Sc in 2nd chain from hook and each chain across. This will create a foundation row of single crochet stitches.
  2. Turn your work to the right side.

Row 2

  1. Ch 1, *skip next stitch (sk next st), 3 double crochet (dc) in next stitch, skip next stitch, single crochet (sc) in next stitch; repeat from * across.
  2. This row will create the waffle stitch pattern. The * symbol indicates the repeat sequence.
  3. Turn your work to the right side.

Row 3

  1. Ch 1, sc in each double crochet and single crochet across. This row will fill in the spaces created in Row 2.
  2. Turn your work to the right side.

Row 4

  1. Ch 1, *skip next single crochet, 3 dc in next single crochet, skip next single crochet, sc in next single crochet; repeat from * across.
  2. This row will create another waffle stitch pattern.
  3. Turn your work to the right side.

Repeat Rows 3-4

  1. Repeat Rows 3-4 until your piece measures the desired length, ending with Row 3.

Finishing

  1. Fasten off and weave in all ends.
  2. Block your piece lightly if desired. This will help the stitches relax and the blanket to lay flat.

Tips and Variations

  • Adjusting the Gauge: If your gauge is different, adjust the number of chains in the foundation row accordingly.
  • Changing Colors: You can change colors at the end of any row by simply cutting the yarn and starting a new color.
  • Adding Edging: You can add a simple border of single crochet or a more elaborate edging to finish the blanket.
