Supplies:

  • Size 4 medium weight yarn in tan/brown for the body (around 50 yards)
  • Small amount of green yarn for the leaves
  • 10 mm safety eyes (or black yarn for embroidered eyes)
  • 3.5 mm crochet hook
  • Stitch markers
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors
  • Stuffing material

Abbreviations:

  • mc = magic circle
  • sc = single crochet
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • inc = increase (2 sc in the same stitch)
  • dec = decrease (crochet 2 sc together)
  • st = stitch
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • ch = chain
  • BLO = back loop only

Body and Head:

Body:

  1. Round 1: 6 sc in mc (6)
  2. Round 2: inc around (12)
  3. Round 3: (1 sc, inc) around (18)
  4. Round 4: (2 sc, inc) around (24)
  5. Round 5-8: sc around (24)
  6. Round 9: (2 sc, dec) around (18)
  7. Round 10: (1 sc, dec) around (12)
  8. Round 11: sc around (12)

Head:

  1. Round 1: 6 sc in mc (6)
  2. Round 2: inc around (12)
  3. Round 3: (1 sc, inc) around (18)
  4. Round 4: (2 sc, inc) around (24)

Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing the head to the body.

Arms (make 2):

Fasten off, stuff lightly, and sew the arms to the sides of the body.

Legs (make 2):

Stuff the legs and sew them to the bottom of the body.

Leaves on Head:

  3. Fold in half and slip stitch around the edge.

Make 4-5 leaves, alternating between light and dark green yarns. Sew these leaves to the top of Baby Groot’s head.

Details:

  • Eyes: Attach the safety eyes between rounds 6 and 7 of the head, or embroider eyes with black yarn.
  • Mouth: Use black yarn to embroider a small smile.
  • Body Texture: Add a few strands of brown yarn on the body, weaving them to look like “bark” or twisting them for a natural wood effect.

Finishing:

  • Stuff the body and head firmly and sew the head to the body.
  • Weave in all ends and adjust the leaves as necessary.
