Materials

  • Yarn:
    • Yellow (main body)
    • White (egg shell)
    • Orange (beak, bobbles)
    • Recommended: Parfait Chunky weight
  • Hook: 4mm
  • Other:
    • 8mm safety eyes
    • Stuffing
    • Tapestry needle
    • Stitch markers (optional)

Pattern Instructions

1. Chick Body (Yellow Yarn)

  • Round 1: 8sc in MR. (8)
  • Round 2: inc in each stitch. (16)
  • Round 3: [7sc, inc] x2(18)
  • Round 4: sc around. (18)
  • Round 5:4sc, make arm, 9sc, make arm, 5sc(18)
    • Arm: Ch 2, sc in 2nd ch from hook, slst back into body.
  • Round 6: sc around. (18)
    • Switch to orange yarn for bobbles.
  • Round 7:6sc, MBO, 3sc, MBO, 7sc(18)
    • MBO: 3 unfinished double crochets (4 loops on hook before yarn through).
  • Round 8: dec x9. (9)
    • Attach safety eyes between Rounds 4–5, 4 stitches apart. Stuff firmly.
  • Round 9: dec once (leave remaining stitches unworked). (8)
    • Slst next stitch, fasten off invisibly (see guide below), sew hole closed.

Mouth: With orange yarn, embroider a “V” between eyes (Rounds 4–5).


2. Egg Shell (White Yarn)

Part 1 (Top Half):

  • Round 1: 6sc in MR. (6)
  • Round 2: inc x6. (12)
  • Round 3: [sc, inc] x6(18)
  • Round 4: sc around. (18)
  • Round 5: [2sc, inc] x6(24)
  • Round 6: [11sc, inc] x2(26)
  • Round 7: sc around. (26)
    • Slst, invisibly fasten off, weave ends.

Part 2 (Bottom Half):

  • Round 1: 8sc in MR. (8)
  • Round 2: inc x8. (16)
  • Round 3: [sc, inc] x8(24)
  • Round 4: [11sc, inc] x2(26)
  • Rounds 5–7: sc around. (26)
    • Test fit chick inside. If gap remains, add:
    • Round 8 (optional): sc around. (26)
    • Slst, fasten off invisibly, weave ends.

Special Techniques

Invisible Fasten Off

  1. After slst, skip 1 stitch, insert needle into next stitch.
  2. Pull needle through back loop of the slst.
  3. Gently tighten (avoid over-pulling).

Mini Bobble Stitch (MBO)

  • Yarn over, insert hook into stitch, pull up loop (3 loops on hook).
  • Repeat twice more in same stitch (7 loops total).
  • Yarn over, pull through all 7 loops.

Finishing

  1. Assemble egg shell around chick.
  2. Weave in all loose ends.
